The move

On Thursday, Oct 22, the Nasdaq fell 2.6% to 26,008.86. The S&P 500 lost 1.21% to 7,663.43. For the Nasdaq it was the worst day since June. Chip stocks led the fall as fear about AI spending came back. The VIX jumped from 16.68 to 19.03.

One bad day is not a crash. The question is whether the market was ready to fall. Three readings on this site say it was.

What the numbers say

Crash-risk score: 67.0%. Two of three crash warnings are on. The Buffett Indicator reads 232% of GDP. Before the 2000 crash it was 146%.

Shiller PE: 41. That is the 99th percentile of 1,868 months since 1871. The last time it was this high was the run-up to the dot-com top.

Fear and Greed Index: 30.4, Fear. Junk-bond demand scores 2.8 out of 100, Extreme Fear. The bond market was scared before stocks fell.

The closest past case

The Market Analogs page ranks every month since 1976 against today. The closest match is August 1999, a 79.8% match, with a Shiller PE of 41.9. All five top matches come from 1999.

Here is the uncomfortable part. After August 1999 the S&P 500 still rose 14.9% in a year. The top came in March 2000. Then the Nasdaq lost most of its value. The setup that looks like today was not the crash itself. It was the last stretch before it.

Is Thursday the start? Nobody knows. But the market is priced like 1999, and the fear is back.
